Reef-net Revival

Reef-net fishing was the epitome of Coast Salish salmon harvesting, using traditional indigenous technology and knowledge systems to fill their canoes. As University of Victoria doctoral student Nick Claxton discovered, this method — outlawed a century ago by Washington and British Columbia in order for canneries to take over Coast Salish fishing sites — was the backbone of Salish Sea society. Through research, learning and practice, Claxton hopes to bring it back.
